Man guilty of female death in 2019 at Indianapolis church

Indianapolis-A man was convicted of murder for the death of a woman who was found to have been strangled and stabbed in a church in Indianapolis, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Robert Burkes was convicted after a day’s trial in the murder of Julie Morey.

Julie Morey, 58, was found dead at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on November 3, 2019.

Church leaders say she was homeless and was not a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, but had been visiting the church for at least two years.

“The case was resolved through the efforts of a true community,” Marion County prosecutor Ryan Mears said in a news release. “Witnesses and nearby businesses played an important role through investigations and prosecutions, ultimately leading to justice for Molly and her family.”

During the investigation, prosecutors learned that Molly had filed a police report claiming that Burkes had hit her face and blackened her eyes, the prosecutor said.

Forensic reports indicate that Burkes’ DNA was on the victim’s hands, face, neck, and under her nails.

A sentencing trial was set up on March 10.
