Philadelphia (AP) — Inducted into the Hall of Fame, known as the “Shot Doc,” Herb Magee will retire from Jefferson University at the end of the season, dragging only Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski among all active coaches. ..

Maggie is the only basketball coach who has won many victories at his alma mater, which has been called by various names for many years.

Due to a pandemic last season, Division II Rams didn’t play. 80-year-old Maggie will coach this season before giving control to his successor Jimmy Riley. Reilly has been a member of Magee’s staff since 2007.

Maggie has a record of 1,123-444 (win percentage 0.717) in 53 seasons. Krzyzewski, who will retire after another season at Duke, is the only college basketball coach in all categories to win more (1,170).

Maggie was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011.

Maggie finished his playing career with Philadelphia Textiles at the time as a school career scoring leader with 2,235 points. He averaged 29.1 points per season and was two small college All-America selections. Boston drafted Maggie on the 62nd pick of the 1963 draft, but decided not to participate in the Celtics and returned to textiles, which later became the University of Philadelphia.

He took over as head coach in 1967 and was an assistant coach until he won 21 games. Maggie culminated in 1970, when Rams won his only national championship. Rams defeated Tennessee in the title game, winning 28 games in a row that season.

The University of Philadelphia merged with Thomas Jefferson University in 2017 and became simply known as Jefferson.
