3 TD Hall Pass, BYU Top No.21 Utah 26-17 | WGN Radio 720

Provo, Utah (AP) BYU has been working to build a team with rigorous defenses and efficient attacks, following the Utah’s ancient blueprint.

Cougar finally found a way to beat Ute using the same blueprint.

Jalen Hall threw three touchdown passes, attacking a total of 241 yards, helping BYU defeat No. 21 Utah 23-17 on Saturday night.

Tyler Argaia added 97 yards with 27 carries as the Cougars lost nine games in a row against Ute. This was BYU’s first win over rivals since 2009 and the team’s largest win margin in the series since 1996.

BYU ran 219 yards and Texas was in a hurry 231 yards at the 2019 Alamo Bowl, making it the first team to win at least 200 yards against Utah.

Utah Utes coach Kyle Whittingham said, “I’m sure I’ll be in the house so I don’t lose my line of scrimmage.” That is our MO, and that is what we are most good at. However, we hurriedly surrendered nearly 250 yards and couldn’t get the bag. “

Mika Bernard ran 146 yards and touched down with a 12-carry to lead Utah. Charlie Brewer threw a touchdown of 147 yards to Ute, who dragged the entire game.

Utah cut BYU’s lead to 23-17 with a run 22 yards from Bernard with 9:31 remaining. The Cougars responded with a six-minute drive that ended with a 21-yard field goal from Jake Aldroid, effectively ending Ute’s comeback hope.

“I love the fighting of the players,” said BYU coach Karani Shitake. “I’m glad I got this victory.”

BYU forced a Utah turnover at the beginning of the first quarter. Charlie Brewer threw an intercept that Chaz Are You returned to Utah 30 on Utah’s first drive. Tavion Thomas messed with the ball on Utah’s second drive and bounced to Izaya Heron at Utah 42.

The Cougars didn’t do much of either takeout. Of the two drives that began in Utah, only 37 yards of field goals were scored from Oldroid.

Still, these defensive plays show what was going on for both BYU and Utah.

“I know that everyone in that defense would have sacrificed something to get that victory, and that’s what we did,” said BYU linebacker Peyton Wilger. rice field.

BYU stayed on the ground and eventually reached the end zone in the second quarter. The cougar extended the lead to 10-0 with a 4-yard toss from the hole to Neil Pow. They ran 12 times on a 14-play drive, emphasizing the sidelines of the hole with an 18-yard scramble in 4th and 11th situations from Utah 36.

Utah cut the lead 10-7 with a 20-yard pass from Brewer to the wide open Brandtkais. BYU stopped Ute at Cougar 8 on the 4th to avoid taking the first lead. The Cougars then marched 93 yards in 11 plays, culminating in a 2-yard TD catch by Samsung Naqua, extending the lead to 16-7 just before halftime. Hall danced from pressure and threw 33 yards of darts at Kianu Hill to set Naqua’s score.

Hall made two big runs in the second half of the third quarter to set a four-yard pass to Gunner Romney, extending BYU’s lead to 23-7 with 38 seconds remaining.

He ended up with eight carries for a total of 92 yards.

“He was able to use his feet to avoid the pressure,” said Shiitake. “He was able to use his feet to stretch the drive.”

Take away

Utah: Ut started with a fuss of attacks after two quick turnovers. Utah couldn’t find the rhythm in a quarter and couldn’t keep the drive, going 3 down to 2 of 9 and 4 down to 2 0.

BYU: Hall took advantage of his elusive speed to create a big play that kept multiple drives alive. It complemented the dominant performance in the cougar trenches. BYU outperformed Utah in both the rushyard and the passyard.

Successful third down

BYU went to 19-11 in 3rd place against Utah. The cougar, who succeeded in extending the drive, was able to hold the ball for another 11 minutes. They played a total of 76 plays, keeping Ute at 51 plays.

“You have to stop,” said Utah linebacker Devin Lloyd. “We controlled them most first down and second down, but there are too many third down conversions. It’s easy and there are too many third down conversions.”

There is no HAVOC PLAYS

Utah’s defense did not respond to its Sack Lake City nickname on Saturday night. Ute created a zero sack after failing to contain the hole many times in a broken play. Utah also did not generate sales and ended up with a sales margin of minus 2 against the cougar.

BYU, on the other hand, had a pair of sack, and after giving 345 yards to Arizona, Ute only got a total of 340 yards in a week.

Impact on polls

Utah may be out of the AP Top 25 after losing to BYU.
