Brookfield, Illinois (AP) — Animals at the Brookfield Zoo on the outskirts of Chicago are uniquely vaccinated with COVID-19.
Primates, small carnivores, large cats and bears will be shot first.
Dr. Mike Adkeson, vice president of clinical medicine at the Zoological Society of Chicago, who manages the zoo, said:
“Vaccination of animals is not only important for their own health, but healthy animals also help maintain human health,” he said.
Similar shots began at the Detroit Zoo and other zoos in the United States. Like humans, animals receive two doses every three weeks.
Vaccines manufactured by Zoetis are approved by the federal government and Illinois state authorities.
