Flames fall from the section of the New Orleans Super Dome roof | Nation

New Orleans (AP) — Smoke and flames were fired from the sides of the roof of the Super Dome on Tuesday as the crew cleaned the New Orleans sports and entertainment arena and prepared for painting.

The New Orleans Fire Department confirmed that firefighters responded to the flames on the roof of the building shortly after 12:30 pm. The fire seemed to be controlled after a while.

The New Orleans emergency management service said on Twitter that it was transferring one person to a hospital because of a “mild burn.” Emergency authorities have called on people to stay away from the area.

This week, crew members were force-washing the roof in preparation for painting the roof, according to people familiar with the matter.

The fire broke out in a section of the superdome roof called the “Guttertab,” said Doug Thornton, ASM Global VP of the stadium. Times Pikayun / New Orleans Advocate. Thornton told newspapers that he was assessing the damage, but so far it did not appear to undermine the structural integrity of the iconic New Orleans sports and entertainment venues.

A photo posted on the city’s emergency management Twitter feed showed that firefighters were in a trench separating the roof and outer wall of the Superdome when they sprayed it against a fire-blackened wall.

ASM Global manages the Super Dome. A spokeswoman did not immediately answer the call from the Associated Press.

The NFL’s New Orleans Saints regularly play home games at the venue, often reaching capacity. The Super Dome has also been the site of seven Super Bowls in recent decades and has been used for concerts, college football and other events.

The next Saints home game at Superdome is scheduled for October 3rd, when the team will face the New York Giants. The team’s final pre-season home game, scheduled for August 28, was canceled due to the imminent hurricane Ida, who landed the next day. The team has been practicing in the Dallas area since the storm. The September 12 match against the team’s Green Bay Packers was moved to Jacksonville, Florida. This is due to concerns about the city’s wider infrastructure and dome staff, although the dome itself was not damaged during Ida.
