Ford adds 450 jobs to meet the demand for new electric trucks | WGN Radio 720

Dearborn, Michigan (AP) — Ford Motor Co. will spend $ 250 million to meet the demand for the new F-150 Lightning and will add 450 jobs at its three Michigan plants. ..

Ford has already made more than 150,000 reservations for the new electric version of its very popular F-150 pickup truck, and Ford’s Americas president Kumar Garhotra said on Thursday’s news event. I said in the meantime.

“It’s time to get orders, make reservations, and (increase) capacity to meet that demand,” he said.

Galhotra unveiled at the new Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, the home of the automaker. The first prototype truck is being manufactured here.

Ford offered a tour of the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center not only to media members, but also to government officials, including Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The facility will be “a place where hard-working men and women will determine and build the future. UAW.”

Ford officials hope that the F-150 Lightning will be a catalyst to accelerate the transition from gasoline-powered vehicles to battery-powered vehicles in the United States. The new truck, which will be available to customers by next spring, can travel up to 300 miles (480 km) per battery charge and starts at around $ 40,000.

Ford’s $ 250 million investment creates 450 hours of direct employment, with most of those workers assembling the F-150 Lightning at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center. Workers at the Lawson Building Components Plant in Ipsilanti will assemble the batteries, and the Sterling Heights Vandik Electric Powertrain Center will increase its capacity to supply Lightning with electric motors and transaxles.

Ford said the investment and additional work would help increase production capacity to 80,000 trucks a year.

“Electric cars aren’t California huffs,” said Debbie Dingell, a Democratic US lawmaker in Dearborn. “They are driven by real Americans.”
