Madison, Wisconsin (AP) — Cornelius Johnson caught both Cade McNamara’s touchdown passes, and 14th Michigan defeated Wisconsin 38-17 on Saturday, losing quarterback Graham Mertz to a chest injury.
Wisconsin (1-3, 0-2 Big Ten) dragged 13-10 and started the third quarter with the ball when Marts was dismissed by Duxton Hill in the third and ninth plays. After the play, Meltz and tight-end Jake Ferguson were injured in the chest and went to the locker room, neither of which returned to the game.
After Meltz and Ferguson left, Michigan scored 25 straight points to keep the game out of reach.
Wolverines (5-0, 2-0) have stopped the rushing attack on Wisconsin since 2001 and won Madison for the first time. This is what Michigan has failed in the last few seasons. Michigan lost on each of its last five trips to Camp Randall Stadium.
Wisconsin defeated Michigan 35-14 in 2019 and 49-11 in 2020, rushing over 340 yards in each game. Michigan limited badgers to 43 yards with 32 carries on Saturday.
McNamara ran 197 yards, 17 out of 28 yards. The highly advertised freshman quarterback JJ McCarthy also played and had a 1-yard touchdown run and a 56-yard touchdown pass to Dalen Baldwin.
Meltz was a 15-8 at 115 yards with a touchdown pass to Chimeredike before he was injured. Chase Wolf replaced Wolf and made a 52-yard 8-3 with a touchdown pass to Intercept and Clay Kufif.
Michigan led 10-0, surpassing Wisconsin 122 minus 2 in the first 20 minutes or more of the game. This is because the badger failed to complete the pass or win the first down on any of the first four possessions.
Wolverines started scoring in flea flicker, giving McNamara a 34-yard touchdown pass to Johnson. McNamara and Johnson reconnected in the fourth quarter with a score of 13 yards.
Wisconsin has returned to the game by acquiring the last two possessions in the first half. Meltz connected with Dyke with a 36-yard complete and an 18-yard touchdown, dropping Michigan’s lead to 13-10, with seven seconds remaining in the first half.
But when Meltz collapsed, the badger never threatened again.
Honor Alvarez
Wisconsin honored former coach and athletic director Barry Alvarez at a half-time ceremony. Alvarez resigned as coach in 2005 and retired as an athletic director earlier this year.
Prime Minister Rebecca Blank announced on Friday that the stadium at Camplandor Stadium will be named after Alvarez. The changes will take effect next season and the stadium will be “Barry Alvarez Field at Camp Randall Stadium”.
Stricker’s homecoming
The US Ryder Cup caption and Steve Stricker from Madison were recognized during the first quarter timeout. The US team defeated Europe 19-9 at Whistling Straits, just outside Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and won the Ryder Cup.

Michigan: Wolverines, who ran the ball at 74% of the snaps for Saturday this season, changed their strategy against Wisconsin’s Rand Defense. McNamara did not throw more than 16 passes in any of the first four games in Michigan. … Wolverine showed a lot of boldness in the fourth and shortest situation. They were three-fifths in force-down conversions, including McCarthy’s touchdown run.
Wisconsin: Badgers lost three out of four games after being ranked 12th to start the season, so we need to worry about how soon Meltz or Ferguson will return. Wisconsin has lost seven of the last 13 games and lost to the ranked teams for eight consecutive games. Meltz’s injury occurred when he lost to Notre Dame 41-13 from four interception performances last week and showed signs of bounce. … Badgers played without the regular starting center Joe Tipman, who was spotted during the pre-match warm-up.
