Portage, India — The beaches of Indiana Dunes National Park were closed after the spill of plants from US Steel.
Authorities said they did not know what the orange substance was spilling into the Burns Canal at this time. The beach will be closed until the test results are returned.
Portage Mayor Surinch said he began receiving calls about the substance around 6 pm on Sunday. She immediately went to the lake to take a picture.
“I don’t like things that don’t belong to the lake enter the lake,” Lynch said. “At first it was along the edge, but then it started. By the time I left, it was all over the channel.”
Indiana American Water shut off the intake valve as a precautionary measure while several crew members were collecting samples.
“I know there are a lot of tests going on today,” Lynch said. “US Steel assured me to contact me as soon as I got any results.”
US Steel shut down its factory as the situation became clear.
“US Steel shut down the Midwest plant as a precautionary measure after a turmoil at the finish line wastewater treatment plant. The plant remains down until conditions stabilize. This upset Is currently believed to be the cause of the discolored water seen from one of our outlets. Early signs indicate that it is higher than normal suspended solids in water, identifying the cause. US Steel has given all appropriate notifications to regulators and some officials from the US Environmental Protection Agency, Indiana Environmental Administration, US Coast Guard, Porter County, etc. Was on the scene.
