Kentucky gets a chance to “prove it” against Florida 10
It’s proof-it’s time for the Kentucky Football Program.
At 4-0, Wildcats feels ready to compete with the Big Boy at the Southeastern Conference. And when 10th Florida arrives in Lexington for the Big East Division Contest on Saturday night, Chance is literally knocking on the big blue door.
How does Kentucky answer?
“I think players know that if they play well, they can play with anyone,” said Mark Stoops, coach of Wildcats. “That’s the point we’ve reached programmatically, but we still have to do it.
“We need to have a great week. We have to play well. We have to be well prepared. We need to manage what we can do and do it at the highest level. I have.”
Tennessee has historically been Kentucky’s biggest football rival, but especially to build a program that allows Wildcats to do what they’ve done in basketball for generations in football since the 2012 season. It has traditionally produced the cruelest results since Stoop was hired.
Kentucky is 1-7 against Florida under the stoop and has at least four losses that are harder to swallow than the visceral plate. One of those losses includes 2017, when Wildcats wasted 13 points in the fourth quarter lead and lost 28-27.
The other was the result of a controversial 2014 call that helped the Gators win the 36-30 extra time. And in 2015, Kentucky managed three field goals, but had a chance to win with two possessions in the fourth quarter.
This is one of Florida’s 16 consecutive wins at Krogerfield and sold out because insiders of the Kentucky program believe it’s a breakthrough game. Cats are 2-0 at the conference, thanks to a 16-10 victory in South Carolina last week.
“We’re full, but we’re really looking forward to a great homely atmosphere this weekend,” Stoops said.
Gators (3-1, 1-1) will join this after processing Tennessee 38-14 last week. Some wondered if Florida would suffer emotional disappointment after shocking top-ranked Alabama (31-29) on September 18, but the Gators took the lead shortly before half-time. I pulled away from Volz in the second half.
Quarterback Emory Jones has arguably speeded up Florida in the best game of his career. Jones completed 21 of the 27 passes at 209 yards and ran 144 yards. This is the first Gators QB to achieve a 200-100 double since Tim Tebow went in 2009.
“I was just processing the information, processing the defenses, and I was doing it pretty smoothly,” Jones said. “I made a quick decision. It feels more comfortable there because I know about myself.
“Overall, it was a pretty good performance for me, but there were still a lot of things I could do better, and there were some mistakes I still made.”
Jones avoided picking against Tennessee after being intercepted five times in the first three games. And at least for now, the story of inserting a freshman in a red shirt, Anthony Richardson, is over.
In Florida, that version of Jones will be required for the first actual road test. The Gators won in South Florida on September 11, but the Bulls are far from the opposite level Wildcats offers this weekend.
“It’s very difficult to challenge from one weekend to the next,” said Florida coach Donyell Malen.
