New York (AP) — When Coco Gauff in tears congratulated her opponent on the women’s doubles title at the US Open, she showed the age difference in court.
Samantha Stosur, she revealed, was the first professional tennis player to sign her.
“It was a little scary idea,” said 37-year-old Stosur.
Stosur did not let 17-year-old Gauff win her first Grand Slam title.
Stosur and Zhang Shuai defeated Gauff and Caty McNally 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 at Flushing Meadows on Sunday, winning their second major doubles title together and denying teens first. ..
“For us, this was our second Grand Slam final. I’ve been a little more,” Stosur said. “It’s like,’Okay, I’ve done this a few times more than you, so I have to try to use everything I have.'”
Gauff was just one year old when Stosur won her first US Open title in the Women’s Doubles Championship with Lisa Raymond in 2005. The Australian won her biggest singles title at Flushing Meadows in 2011 and knocked out Serena Williams in the final.
Gauff and McNally, 19, were about to join Emma Raducanu as female champions this week. British-born 18-year-old Leylah Fernandez defeated 19-year-old Leylah Fernandez in a singles title on Saturday.
The 11th-seeded American hasn’t been able to add this US Open Doubles title to the juniors who won together in 2018.
“We know we will eventually be Grand Slam champions,” Gauff said.
It was 11 consecutive victories for Stosur and Chan, who also won Cincinnati before the US Open. They had to leave for a while while Zhang was pairing with Chinese players before the Olympics, but now there is no reason to quit.
“I’m sure I’ll play more together,” said Zhang, 32.
The first set swung suddenly while McNally was serving, one point away from four all-ties. Zhang placed the lob above Gauff’s head perfectly on the back edge of the shade of the court while performing five straight points to steal the game and took the set at the next point.
Gauff and McNally gathered in a draw, and after Stosur and Chan again led McNally 5-3, they went deep into the third set before Stosur entered the match. She agreed that her opponent had another chance.
“They just play fearlessly. It’s their credit,” Stosur said. “I think they’re a really great team. Again, they’re definitely going back to this situation and challenging the title.
“Not yet,” she added with a smile. “Not today.”
