Chicago (AP) — Two-way star Shohei Ohtani will not pitch to the Los Angeles Angels on Friday due to pain in his right arm that could put him aside as the pitcher for the rest of the season.
“With prolonged pain, you may not be able to see him pitch,” Angels manager Joe Maddon said before the match against the Chicago White Sox on Thursday.
Otani (9-2, 3.36 ERA) felt pain while playing catch on Wednesday. Maddon said during the meeting he raised the possibility that ALMVP would be closed on the mound for the rest of the season.
Maddon said Otani is currently not planning to see a doctor and has not decided when to resume catching.
Otani (27) hasn’t pitched since September 10, when he was tagged with 9 hits and 6 runs in 3 1/3 innings in Houston.
Maddon said Otani would like to continue pitching for his tenth victory.
“(10 wins) always looks better than 9 wins,” Maddon said. “But that cannot be the driving force.”
Arm discomfort does not prevent Otani from continuing his role as a designated hitter. Otani played against the White Sox on Thursday, finishing second in the major leagues with 44 home runs and 74 extra-base hits, and a slugging percentage of .599, fourth.
