Athens, Greece (AP) — The body of Greek composer and politician Mikis Theodorakis will be placed in the chapel of Athens Cathedral for three days starting Monday afternoon, one day earlier than originally planned. ..
This move occurs after the controversy over the burial of Theodorakis appears to have been resolved. His family reportedly objected to his burial on an island south of Crete, according to his last wishes.
The court temporarily suspended the burial program while waiting for the dispute to be resolved. The Greek national broadcaster said the final decision on the details of the burial is scheduled for Tuesday.
Theodorakis died Thursday at the age of 96. His daughter said he would be buried near Corinth in the village of Vlahati, where he maintained the villa.
However, in 2013, Theodorakis published a letter to the then mayor of the town of Chania on Crete, stating that the composer wanted to be buried in a nearby Galatas cemetery, despite family disagreements. ..
Theodorakis was well known in Greece for his political activities as well as his musical career. He has written a wide range of works, from dark symphonies to popular television and film scores, such as “Serpico” and “Zorba the Greek.”
He is also remembered by the Greeks for his opposition to the military junta, which ruled Greece in 1967-74, when he was persecuted and imprisoned and his music was outlawed.
The Greek Communist Party’s political office said the body of Theodorakis had been in condition since Monday over the weekend and a “farewell ceremony” would take place on Wednesday before the late composer flew to Crete. Church services and burials take place on Thursdays.
Theodorakis had a turbulent relationship with the Communist Party known as the Greek Communist Party KKE, leaving in the late 1960s, rejoining in the late 1970s, and being elected to the conservative New Democracy in 1990. ..
However, he wrote to Communist Party General Secretary Dimitris Kotunbas in October, essentially leaving him to arrange the funeral.
