File – Detroit Red Wings left-wing Tyler Bertuzzi, 59, is waiting for the pack to drop during an NHL hockey match against the Dallas Stars on Thursday, January 28, 2021. Bertuzzi is the only unvaccinated Detroit Red Wings player to attend a training camp and, as a result, faces the possibility of missing all his team’s matches in Canada this season, General said. General manager Steve Yzerman said Wednesday that Tyler Bertuzzi is the only unvaccinated Detroit Red Wings player and could miss all team matches this season in Canada.

Iserman said in the camp’s opening video call that the rest of the organization, including himself, was completely vaccinated against COVID-19. Bertuzzi is in Detroit to start training on ice on Thursday, but the forward could lose more than $ 450,000 on salaries for nine Red Wings games north of the border. The NHL protocol allows teams to suspend players without payment if unvaccinated players are unable to attend.

“If you enter Canada in the near future, you will not be able to enter Canada without being vaccinated, which is clearly a problem when playing against Canadian teams,” said Isaman. “Will that change? I can’t think of anything. But now, and under Canadian law, he can’t cross the border, so he won’t play in any Canadian game.”

This includes Detroit’s first road game on October 23 in Montreal. 26-year-old Bertuzzi is allowed to practice with his teammates, but when working out in the gym, in addition to other restrictions on the road, he must wear a mask around the rink and keep a distance.

Asked if Bertuzzi, who chose not to get the coronavirus vaccine, was disappointed, Iserman said: That is his decision. “

“I’m not in a position to force anyone. I can’t force anyone to vaccinate,” Yzerman added. “Tyler has his reason, and I’m sure you have the opportunity to ask him that question.”

So far, Bertuzzi is the most well-known NHL player publicly recognized as unvaccinated due to training camps throughout North America. By the time the regular season begins on October 12, Vice-Chairman Bill Daily estimated that there were only about 10 to 15 unvaccinated players in the league.

According to Oilers GM Ken Holland, veteran defenseman Duncan Keith, who traded from Chicago to Edmonton in the summer, will be quarantined until October 1 after choosing to be vaccinated in the second half of the offseason. It is said that it has been done.

Holland said his team had one unvaccinated player who could not be identified and was not ready to commit to that player’s status during the season.

Others have a strict policy on vaccination status.

Columbus Blue Jackets did not invite unvaccinated forward Zac Rinaldo to the NHL camp and dumped an assistant coach who had previously refused vaccination. New York Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello is in the process of thinking about what to do with the team’s only unvaccinated player and said Europe is one of the options.
