Chicago (AP) — A new relief fund launched by Chicago authorities could boost hundreds of artists and entertainment industry workers in the city who lost their income during the pandemic.
The $ 2.3 million Chicago Creative Worker Assistance Program will benefit members of the arts and entertainment industry with grants ranging from $ 2,000 to $ 5,000, the City’s Department of Culture and special events announced Thursday.
Art managers, educational artists, craftsmen, curators, independent cultural producers and technicians who have lost their income in the last 18 months due to coronavirus restrictions are eligible for assistance. Chicago Sun Times report.
Mayor Lori Wrightfoot said in a statement that many gig workers have expired pandemic unemployment benefits and hope that the money will provide creative relief.
“The pandemic has hit our arts and culture community in a particularly devastating way as the show was canceled, the music venue was closed and the artists faced financial instability,” Lightfoot said.
DCASE Commissioner Mark Kelly said he looks forward to the city’s talented artists coming back into the limelight this fall with the resurgence of entertainment venues preparing for the busy end of the year.
