Charleston, Illinois (Wand)-The Troopers said a driver who had fled the authorities died in a weekend Charleston accident, injuring four others.

At around 4:47 pm on Sunday, state police said witnesses had reported the reckless driver to Coles County Communications and soldiers. Mattoon police found a driver at Lake Land Boulevard at around 4:49 pm and began stopping traffic. The vehicle then fled the area.

Charleston police then found the fleeing vehicle and attempted to stop traffic on Lincoln Avenue and Reynolds Drive in Charleston. The driver failed to stop again and ran away.

According to Troopers, the vehicle collided with several other vehicles in Charleston’s Illinois Route 16 and University Drive areas around 5 pm on Sunday. The driver of the vehicle that fled the authorities died in the hospital, and a total of four others were injured and taken to the hospital.

Charleston police have requested Illinois State Police DCI Zone 5 to investigate the events leading up to the crash. Organizations involved in supporting the investigation include the Charleston and Mattoon Police, the Illinois State Police Traffic Accident Reconstruction Unit (TCRU), and the Coles County Coroners Office.

The investigation was held on Monday night and is underway.
