Washington (AP) — A prosecutor tasked with investigating the US government’s investigation into Russia’s election interference has charged a prominent cybersecurity lawyer with false statements to the FBI on Thursday.
The proceedings against Michael Sussman, a lawyer at Perkins Koy Law Firm, are the second indictment filed by special counsel John Durham in a two-and-a-half-year job. However, both cases filed by Durham are at the heart of Robert Mueller’s previous investigation that Russia interfered extensively on behalf of Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and the Trump campaign welcomed its assistance. It does not overturn the discovery.
It reveals the widespread evolving nature of Durham’s research. In addition to scrutinizing the activities of FBI and CIA personnel early in the Russian investigation, Sasman, who provided information to the U.S. government when scrambled to determine if Trump’s peers were coordinating. I also examined the behavior of individuals like Russia with Russia to upset the results of the election.
The complaint was filed with the FBI’s legal counsel in September 2016 when he raised concerns from cybersecurity researchers about a potentially suspicious contact between Russia-based Alfa Bank and a Trump organization server. He accused the FBI of lying when asked about his conversation. The FBI investigated the problem but found no relationship. Sussmann is a former federal prosecutor specializing in cybersecurity.
Sasman’s lawyers Sean Berkowitz and Michael Bosworth are highly respected national security lawyers whose clients have worked for the Justice Department under both Republican and Democratic administrations. Won the case and said he was confident that he would “prove his good name.” .. “
“Mr. Sasman has not committed a crime,” they said in a statement. “The prosecution here would be an unfounded, unprecedented, and unjustified deviation from the non-political and principled way the Judiciary is supposed to do its job.”
The issue of Alfa Bank was not a central element of Russia’s investigation and was not mentioned in Mueller’s 448-page report in 2019.
Perkins Koy, a Sasman company, has a deep connection to democracy. Marc Elias, then partner, mediated a contract with Fusion GPS research firm to investigate Trump’s business relationship with Russia. The work, by former British spy Christopher Steele, has created research papers to help form the basis for a flawed surveillance application for Carter Page, a former Trump campaign official.
Durham’s investigation has already been going on for months longer than the previous special counsel’s investigation into Russia’s election interference by former FBI Director Mueller and his team. The investigation was slowed down by a coronavirus pandemic and experienced leadership turmoil after the top deputy of Durham’s team suddenly departed last fall.
Trump was eager to anticipate Durham’s findings in hopes of benefiting Durham’s reelection campaign, but the fact that Trump is no longer in duty may have once led to a conclusion. Political influence has diminished.
Attorney General William Barr’s appointment of Durham in 2019 was a potential error or fraud in the U.S. government’s investigation into whether Trump’s 2016 presidential election was colluding with Russia to influence the outcome of the election. Designed to investigate behavior.
A two-year study by Mueller proved that the Trump campaign was eager to benefit with the help of the Kremlin and documented multiple interactions between the Russians and Trump’s companions. Investigators said half a dozen aide Trump was charged with various crimes, including false statements, but did not find enough evidence to charge campaigners for colluding with Russia.
So far, Durham has filed only one criminal procedure. A false statement that an FBI lawyer modified the email related to page monitoring to obscure the nature of the existing relationship between the page and the CIA. The lawyer, Kevin Clinesmith, was found guilty and sentenced to probation.
