Cam Newton says he has been vaccinated against COVID-19 infection and is ready to return to the NFL.
The quarterback, cut by New England shortly before the start of the season, posted a video on his YouTube channel saying it was time to return to professional football. He is a free agent.
“Yes, I still want to play soccer,” Newton said in the video. “I still have the urge to go out and play and do what I’ve been doing since I was seven.”
The 2015 NFLM VP was the starter of most Patriots in 2020, turning 7-9 years during the pandemic-influenced season. However, New England chose Mac Jones, the first draft choice this year, to release 32-year-old Newton.
Last season Newton had COVID-19 related issues and he was absent from three preseason practices this summer, which the team called a misunderstanding about the protocol.
Newton was not vaccinated when he was released, but now says he is vaccinated. He added that “the side effects weren’t beneficial to me” because he wasn’t vaccinated, but he wasn’t specific about those side effects.
