Warsaw, Poland (AP) — Saturday’s Gala Concert opens the 18th edition of the famous Frederick Chopin International Piano Competition, which has been postponed for a year due to a coronavirus pandemic.

The October 2-3 convention was scheduled for October 2020, but authorities have banned a crowd of regular fans from auditioning at the National Philharmonic in Warsaw due to social distance requirements. We postponed the popular event in the hope of doing so.

The competition, in which only Chopin’s work is played, has a reputation for starting a global career for winners and finalists. The winner will receive a gold medal, a prize of € 40,000 ($ 45,000) and a prestigious recording and concert contract. Winners will be announced on October 20th.

A concert by 87 participants from all over the world, from South Korea to the United States, will begin on Sunday morning with a performance by Xuanyi Mao from China.

Past winners include Martha Argerich of Argentina, Garrick Ohlsson of the United States, Krystian Zimermann of Poland, and Artur Blechacz and Seong-Jin Cho of South Korea.

The first concert on Saturday will feature piano works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven and Robert Schumann, with Cho and other past finalists Juliana Avdiva, Philippe Giusiano, Kevin Kenner and Dang Thai Son. Thai Son will appear.

The first edition was held in 1927 and every five years thereafter, but World War II postponed the fourth edition until 1949.

Chopin, Poland’s most famous and beloved classical music composer and pianist, was born in 1810 in Zerazovawola, near Warsaw, to a Polish mother and a French father. He left Poland at the age of 19 and expanded his music education in Vienna and Paris. There he settled down, composed, performed concerts and taught the piano. He died in Paris in 1849 and was buried in the Pere Lachaise Cemetery. His heart is in the Holy Cross Church in Warsaw.

There will be no competition auditions on October 17th to allow participants and juries to attend the traditional events of Chopin’s death anniversary.
