Santa Barbara, California (AP) — Fire brigades have made great strides overnight in a wildfire that broke out in the mountains along the coast of Southern California for nearly a week, officials said Sunday.

More than 1,600 firefighters were fighting the flames of the Santa Ynez Mountains west of Santa Barbara by land and air. They were able to stop the move, and federal officials said the flames were contained 78%.

Alisal Fire started last Monday and burned nearly 27 square miles (69 square kilometers). It threatens about 400 buildings.

A 11/2 acre (0.6 hectare) spot fire that ignited outside the suppression line in the northwest corner of the flame was immediately by a firefighter who used a bulldozer and handline on the ground and extinguished the flame with water from the air. Was contained in. On Sunday, there were few hotspots left and the fire brigade was focused on strengthening containment.

Temperatures were expected to drop on Sunday, but gusts of 20 mph (32 km) were expected to blow in the area.

The fire erupted during the strong winds last week and spread rapidly over the surface of the mountains, jumping over highways and railroads to the beach below. Since then, firefighting weather has improved significantly, allowing planes and helicopters to attack fire with delay agents and water.

California wildfires have burned about 3,900 square miles (10,101 square kilometers) this year, destroying more than 3,600 homes, businesses and other structures, according to the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The historic drought in the western United States, linked to climate change, makes it difficult to fight wildfires. It killed millions of trees in California alone. Scientists say climate change has made the west much warmer and drier, more extreme weather, and more frequent and destructive wildfires over the last three decades.
