The Cook County Medical Inspector’s Office said on Saturday that his death had been sentenced to suicide by a gunshot wound.

Illinois State Police said 36-year-old Gerald Mason was found in his police car on the I-94’s northbound local lane shortly before 2 pm
He was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital and sentenced to death at 2:16 pm. Illinois State Police initially said the shooting was “involved by officers” on Friday, but investigations into Mason’s death continued.
At around 1:45 pm, when a woman was driving an inbound Dan Ryan, she saw his car hit the median and went to help and found Mason inside. She desperately asked for help using his radio.
According to state police, Mason worked in the Chicago area and was an 11-year military veteran. The ISP said he was on duty when Mason died of a single gunshot wound in his head.
“Many people called Mason the’Hulk’,” said Brendan Kerry, director of the Illinois State Police Department. “He was a solid and strong man. He even tore his pants while chasing his legs because of those muscles.”
Witnesses said they saw police pull Mason out of the car and take him to the hospital.
“They look like superheroes for days, but they’re neither immortal nor indestructible,” Kelly said. “They are human beings with a heart, a heart and a soul, and they are as fragile as the next person. They have their limits.”
“Everyone loved him. Everyone loved my son,” said his mother, Linda Mason. “I can’t believe he’s gone”
She said her son always wanted to be a police officer. She said she had received a call from her little son on Friday afternoon as social media chatter about the incident spread, and she called Gerald to check him. He didn’t answer, and shortly after she received a call from the hospital.

“They asked me if I had a son,” she said. “I said so. They asked me his name, I told them’Gerald Mason’. They told me I needed to come to college.”
By the time she got there, he was dead.
“I don’t know what else to say. I love him. I will miss him. Yeah, yeah, so much. My heart hurts so much,” she said. “He always wanted to protect people, so he always wanted to be a police officer. He wanted to make the world a better place.”

Mason’s body was escorted in a procession by his colleagues and the Chicago Police Department, and his family trembled with sadness when he saw it.
Mason’s mother said her eldest son was not married and had no children. He will leave a large family behind and everyone will miss him from the bottom of his heart.
