Nijmegen, The Netherlands (AP) — A small section of the stand at NEC Nijmegen’s Goffert Stadium, the top flight club in the Netherlands, collapsed on Sunday, and fans visiting Vitesse Arnhem celebrated the team’s 1-0 victory. .. There were no reports of injuries.
Arnhem players were celebrating on the pitch in front of the fans when the bottom of the stand collapsed. About 35 people stood in the affected section.
One player put his hand on his head when it happened, before deflating when it became clear that no one else was injured.
The fan quickly climbed upwards away from the affected area of the stand.
NEC director Wilco van Schaik told Dutch broadcaster NOS that, as far as he knows, no one was injured. “There was a container under the stand, which prevented a serious situation,” he said.
Hubert Bruls, mayor of Nijmegen, said he was shocked.
“Fortunately, as far as we know, no one was injured. I want to investigate what happened here as soon as possible,” Bruls told NOS.
Vitesse midfielder Riechedly Bazoer was one of the players celebrating with his fans.
“It was a shock,” he told NOS. “Fortunately … everyone survived,” he said.
