Virginia Beach, Virginia (AP) — Virginia Beach leaders want Pharrell Williams to revive the popular Something in the Water Festival next year, but musicians say “toxic energy” is the city. He says he has been running for too long and is reluctant. The city took a more aggressive stance after police officers shot his cousin deadly.
City leaders have called on Grammy-winning producers to revive the festival in 2022. In 2019, the festival brought $ 24 million to the local Hampton Roads economy. However, Williams, who lived there as a child, wrote that he held a festival to ease interracial tensions, and the city appreciated his idea of promoting “human rights for all.” I feel that I haven’t.
“I wish the same energy I felt from Virginia Beach leaders when I lost the festival would be carried after the loss of my relatives,” Williams replied. “I love my city, but for too long it has been run by toxic energies.”
Williams’ 25-year-old cousin Donobon Lynch was killed in March on a chaotic night when 10 people were shot dead in separate incidents. Lynch’s father filed a $ 50 million tort proceeding in June. The city said in a reply that the black Lynch pointed his gun at the policeman who shot him. A police officer, also identified as Black Solomon D. Simmons III, “feared his life and the lives of other police officers and civilians nearby,” the city said.
“We hope to meet Farrell in person to consider his concerns and see what we can do to get things back on track,” Mayor Bobby Dier said. “I am confident that we can move in the right direction by meeting and communicating in person. It is best to build a positive bridge between them.”
