NFL Updates COVID-19 Protocol Prior to Thanksgiving | WGN Radio 720

The NFL requires players and staff to wear masks within the team facility for a week after Thanksgiving, regardless of vaccination status, and requires two COVID-19 tests after vacation.

The league protocol has been updated as a result of the increased proportion of COVID-19 across the country. Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger were unable to play in each consecutive week due to COVID-19.

“This upward trend, coupled with the onset of the cold driving individuals indoors, has increased the risk of infection between players and staff,” the Associated Press sent to the team on Tuesday. “Our experts and data confirm that vaccination remains our strongest defense against viral infections and infections within club facilities.”

No additional masking is required outdoors or in practice bubbles. The test will take place on Monday, November 29th and Wednesday, December 1st.

The league also encourages teams to provide drive-through COVID-19 tests to friends, player families and staff if they are visiting or staying for Thanksgiving. The test should be done before friends and family interact with the player or staff and should be arranged at a different time than when the player or staff is testing.

The team was warned to strictly enforce the protocol at the facility. The NFL is proposing to send league staff to help enforce the protocol at club facilities.

Last week, the NFL fined the Packers $ 300,000 and fined Rogers and wide receiver Allen Lazard $ 14,650 for violating the league and player union protocol.
