Has been updated:Chicago (AP) — A fireworks show unrelated to July 4, with everything related to space being seen throughout the northern United States and Europe in time for Halloween.
On Thursday, the Sun fired what is called an “X-class solar flare” that is strong enough to cause a high-frequency radio outage in parts of South America. The energy from that flare is tracked by a solar plasma and clusters of other matter called coronal mass ejections (CMEs for short). It is heading to Earth and is urging the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to warn of potentially strong geomagnetic storms.
It may sound like a science fiction movie. However, in reality, it means that a significant portion of the northern part of the country could be treated by a light show called the Northern Lights, or Northern Lights.
Geomagnetic storms as large as those that may come can produce a display of light that can be seen at latitudes as low as Pennsylvania, Oregon, and Iowa. It can also cause voltage irregularities in high-latitude power grids as a loss of radio communication on the sunlit side of the planet.
