Uncasville, Connecticut (AP) — The WNBA Semifinal Playoffs Series is tied one game at a time, both of which can play all five games based on their historic and gritty performance to date.

Diana Torashi and Phoenix Mercury opened a shooting clinic because they defeated Las Vegas on Thursday night and scored the most points in a regulated playoff game in the league’s 25-year history. Eight months after undergoing surgery to repair a torn Achilles tendon, Alyssa Thomas sparked Connecticut Sun with a victory at the Chicago Sky.

Both series are currently tied 1-1 and play will shift to Chicago and Phoenix for the next game set scheduled to end on Sunday.

“We brought another way of thinking, aggression, to the game,” said Taurashi, who scored a 37-point career playoff with a 117-91 victory. “That’s the purpose of these games. In Game 1, they were invaders. They played more physically. Today we did it and kept it for a long time.”

Despite dealing with ankle injuries, Taurashi was forced to play in the last four regular season games and the opening playoffs against New York, but he barely missed it. She hit 10 out of 13 shots and scored eight of her career’s best three points.

Her performance took place shortly after Thomas scored 15 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists and even provided Sun with a defensive lift in the series with Chicago. Thomas’s match was even more noteworthy as he returned two weeks before he was injured in an Achilles tendon rupture in January. Her 79-68 victory over Chicago was her fourth match.

“As you know, this is probably one of the most difficult things I’ve ever experienced,” Thomas said of an injury he suffered while playing abroad in January. “There are a lot of hard days. I’m a perfectionist and I’m very used to recovering from things. Bad days, I couldn’t chase it, or I couldn’t push myself. The day was frustrating.

“You really just start from scratch and learn how to walk again. It was a slow and difficult process. But you have to celebrate the little things.”

In order for Connecticut to maintain its momentum, the sun must once again try to contain a powerful sky attack. The team won only twice when Chicago scored less than 80 points this season. In the opening round double-overtime thriller, Sky won 101-95 as Courtney Vandersloo won the second triple-double in WNBA playoff history.

Other tips on the semifinals:

Travel adventure:

Mercury and Ace had no problems flying to Phoenix, but Sky and Sun had a more difficult time. Connecticut coach Kurt Miller said at a post-match press conference that his team would be split into three flights from two different airports to reach Chicago. Sky got up at 3:30 am and had to split into three different airports to get home on Friday.

Miller said he is arranging quirky trips so that tall players don’t have to be in the center seat and are more comfortable on the flight.

“I want you to hear this,” he said. “That’s what this league goes through. That’s what these amazing women in the world experience in what they’re doing.”

Tip:

There hasn’t been at least one sweep in the semi-finals since the WNBA changed the playoff format in 2016. With the exception of 2018, when both semifinals were five games, one in the series was a three-game sweep. .. … Mercury’s 68 points in the first half of Game 2 was a record for the WNBA playoffs. … The WNBA 6th Woman of the Year Kelsey Plum scored an average of 25 points in the first two games of the series.

“Road” home game

Game 3 of the Mercury Ace series will be played in Arizona, as Phoenix’s regular home is used by Disney on Ice. The arena had pre-booked the event and there was no way to know that Mercury would host a playoff game on Sunday. Mercury may need to play away from the usual home in Game 4 as Phoenix Suns hosts the Los Angeles Lakers in an exhibition game on Wednesday night.
