Albuquerque, New MexicoKRQE)-“Hero”. That’s how family and friends remember 17-year-old Xaven Garcia. A teenager in Albuquerque died this week after returning to a burning home to ensure the safety of his family.
Garcia saved his dad after waking up to his flame-filled house late Sunday night. Now he intends to save many others with his last wish to donate his organs.
“He’s a hero for all of us,” said Phil Garcia, Xaven’s dad. “He saved me.”
“He was licensed this week, actually on Friday, and wanted to be a donor,” Phil said. “He asked me about it. I told him,” Yeah, that’s great. “But his dad said that Xaven would donate his organs a few days after the space heater was caught. Did not think Fire at family home.
“The only thing I woke up was that he was yelling at me.” Dad, go out. The house is on fire. “He grabbed me, pulled me out, and I took my breath away because of the smoke in the house,” Phil said.
Realizing that his sister might have already been home from her late shift, and not knowing what time it was, Xaven returned.
He didn’t come out.
“I told him to stay here. I went inside to check her room. It wasn’t a big deal, I almost got stuck there. He was behind I think he ran towards and the neighbor witnessed him coming in and he shouted he shouldn’t come in, “Phil said. “The fire department probably found him for 20 minutes … he was in the smoke for 20-30 minutes. When they took him out, he was almost gone.”
Since then, he has been life-supporting, so waiting for signs of hope was a nightmare. His stepmother, Stacey, was absent at the time and spoke to him just an hour before the fire.
“The last word was,’Mom, I love you,'” Stacy recalls.
The doctor declared his death on Tuesday afternoon. His parents are now looking at his last heroic act of donating his organs. “To live life for others, he’s doing it for them,” Phil said. “I think that’s the ultimate path. It’s a true hero.”
Seniors at Valley High School loved skateboarding, computers, and their families. Lovers want his selfless heritage to be what people remember him.
“Still, to help people, you know, it’s just a blessing,” Stacy said. “We are proud.”
In the near future, UNM Hospital will hold an “honor walk” for Xaven with his family and hospital staff as his body will be guided to the operating room to donate organs. Earlier on Tuesday, Valley High School staff sent a letter to their parents informing them of his death. They plan to have a grief counselor at the school for the next few days.
