Hug, De Rosario wins New York City Marathon wheelchair race | WGN Radio 720

Madison de Rozario of New York (AP) Australia won the New York City Marathon women’s wheelchair race, with past champions Tatyana McFadden and Manuela Schär first winning the Big Apple.

At this year’s Tokyo Paralympic Marathon, 27-year-old Shar won the gold medal in just one second, but blew the field on Sunday and won nearly three minutes in one hour, 51 minutes and one second. McFadden was second and Schar was third.

Delozario, who developed transverse myelitis at the age of four, made his third appearance in New York. Her best finish was 5th in 2017. She is the first Australian to win the NYC Marathon.

Swiss Marcel Hug won his fourth men’s wheelchair race, leaving the field early for his first title since 2017.

The 35-year-old added yet another award in a remarkable year, including four gold medals at the Tokyo Paralympics, including the marathon. He also won the Boston Marathon last month.

Born in spina bifida, Hug finished second in 2018 and 19 after Daniel Romanchuk in the United States. The latter defeat was only one second.

Hug finished at 1:31:24, second was David Weir of England and third was more than six and a half minutes ahead of Romanchuck.

The NYC Marathon is running its 50th edition after being canceled in 2020 due to a coronavirus pandemic. Efforts to maintain the distance between the competitors near the start and finish lines have reduced the field by about 40% to about 30,000 runners.
