Metropolitan Family Service to Support Chicago Citizens for 164 Years Through Chicago Shooting, COVID-19, etc.

Chicago (WLS)-Metropolitan Family Service started 164 years ago. At that time, this organization was called the “Chicago Relief Society.”

A few years later, the victims of the Great Chicago Fire were tasked with managing all relief. Since then, the name has changed and the organization has expanded to eight centers throughout the Chicago region.

Rick Estrada, President and Chief Executive Officer of Metropolitan Family Services, said: “I think the city has grown. Our people have moved from community to community, but we still have what you said to learn, earn, heal and prosper when we started. That is, we offer everything from an early stage in early childhood, workforce preparation programs, legal assistance, mental health, and by helping people achieve empowerment. I just want to make sure they are the owners of their own destiny. “

During the pandemic, Metropolitan Family Services helped families get food, internet access, and transportation. More than 18 months later, Audrena Spence, executive director of the Metropolitan Family Services Calmette Center at the southernmost tip of the city, said some families still suffer from some of the same problems, including food insecurity. ..

In 2016, Metropolitan Family Services hosted the “Communities Partnering 4 Peace” to break the cycle of violence and gangsters.

“In 2016, we were experiencing a historic surge in gun violence,” Estrada said. “It was at that moment that eight partners and Metropolitan Family Services worked together to develop Communities Partnering 4 Peace. An effort to stop this violence and bring peace to the community. 2017, 2018 and 2019. And then there was a COVID-19 pandemic, and now the opposite is happening and violence is on the rise. But now we need to double our efforts in this initiative, but we can. Do it alone. It is a combination of efforts that help bring peace to this city. “

Metropolitan Family Services also helps young people and their future investments through admission programs.

“The college program is a great program for young people to prepare for college, with a particular focus on the first generation,” says Spence.

They start in the freshman year of students and are affiliated with a local high school.

“Prepare them through life coaching and life services as well as tutorial services and support their families. If you have never experienced college as an adult, young people will understand the importance and methods of access to college. It’s really hard to help you understand, “she said.
Metropolitan Family Services will host the 40th Mpower the Night event on November 16th to share stories about the impact of organizations on people and their communities. It’s a virtual event.
