Although Camilleri grew up in the United States, her Maltese identity always wanted to explore her homeland through film, she said in a film panel at the Deadline Contenders Film: International Awards Season Event.
“I was very interested in the world of fishermen. It pervades beauty and tradition, but little is known about it,” he said. “There was a sentimental or romantic notion of fishermen. I wanted to break it down and see what it is to keep this tradition in the modern context.”
The project has been in development for nearly four years, two of which were primarily focused on working with non-professional casts. Filmmakers played an important role with real fishermen. Camilleri was initially hesitant because he didn’t expect outsiders to hear them, but recalls taking the time to persuade him.
“I didn’t give them a script — we improvised a dialogue together and recorded it on the camera. Then we used the discovery to write it back into a script, so Jesmark and David. [Scicluna, the other lead actor] Actually weave their DNA into the film fabric, “he added.
