New York (AP) — The next promotion of Michelle Obama’s memoir “Becoming” will be centered around college students.
The former First Lady will appear with “blackish” actor Yara Shahidi on November 9th at 1:00 pm and will have livestream conversations with students from 22 schools nationwide, from Carpoli Pomona to Prince George’s Community College in Largo, Maryland. Obama and Shahidi speak.
BET will air the event at a later date.
“I can’t wait to be contacted by students across the country because they are navigating research and life at this unprecedented time,” Obama said in a statement on Monday.
“I myself, as a first-generation college student, remember having a hard time managing classes and figuring out where I was on campus. I can’t even imagine how difficult it would be during a pandemic. It’s always in the air. Hopefully they understand that the moments of self-doubt and fear are completely natural, but if we accept those moments, we own our story. And if we use our voice, we can share the best of ourselves with the world. “
President Obama’s book, published in 2018, has sold nearly 10 million copies in the United States alone and continues to sell more than 2,000 copies a week, President David Drake said. Most political memoirs, even by the president and the first lady, are forgotten after the first publicity. However, Obama’s books range from composition to black women’s studies and are assigned everywhere from Ohio State University to Fresno City University.

Julie Gallagher, an associate professor of Penn State Brandywine history, included this book in her course on modern civil rights. She said civil rights stories often focused on the South, but Obama grew up in Chicago, so she talked about the northern states. And Gallagher realized that Obama’s memoirs were an irreplaceable contrast to the way black women are often portrayed in the media.
“This is this woman from a very strong and loving family,” she said. “This is the story of multiple generations of love, determination, grit, and community striving for the American dream.”
In addition to the November 9th event, Crown has donated 100 copies to each of the 12 schools of the Maryland Community College Consortium.
“We know that this book has had a huge impact on young people, especially young women, and has become a touchstone,” Drake said.
Earlier this year, Crown released a young reader version over the age of 10. Obama will help promote when he attends the National Council of English Teachers on November 18th.
