Jerry Kill is the NCAA’s Energizer Bunny – he won’t quit.
Kill, who basically saved the Southern Illinois University football program from extinction, was hired last weekend as a football coach in New Mexico. With the hire, Kill reunites with former SIU athletic director Mario Mottia.
For a little bit of history, the SIU football program is kill Arrived in Carbondale before the 2001 season. Pre-Kill Saluki has lost nine consecutive seasons in the last 14 seasons and has won only one season.

He was a warrior and Kill fought. However, his success led to his inevitable withdrawal from SIU. After leading SIU to the 12-2 mark in 2007, Kill embarked on a football odyssey, starting with a stint in northern Illinois.
After turning the huskys program around, Kill was a big hit and got a job as head coach at the University of Minnesota. Like his tactics, Kill turned around the struggling Minnesota program before recurrent medical problems resigned him.
It set a dramatic return to SIU.
Kill was hired as a special assistant to the Prime Minister and eventually took over the athletic club. There he once again had a dramatic effect and hired Brian Mullins, the coach of men’s basketball. Grant Williams, Soccer; Rosalind Joseph, chase Field; Ed Allen, Volleyball; Daniel Kaufman, Women’s Golf. Jeff Hanson, swimming and diving. Lance Rose, baseball.
However, the urge to coach again shortened Kill’s term.
He joined Virginia Tech’s football staff in the 2019 season. He landed on Texas Christian in the 2020 and 2021 seasons and eventually became a provisional coach for the season. Kill is currently the head coach of Aggie’s.
And he finds himself in a familiar territory – Aggie’s hasn’t had a winning season since 2017.
Still, it seems almost certain that Kill will turn the program around … that’s what he’s doing.
What kills bring to the table is a unique talent.
Through the power of his will, Kill has shown that he can turn the culture of the program around. He has the knack for making players believe in his way, and his coaching philosophy and his optimism are contagious.
And Kill said, “aw shucks, leisurely “Outdoor personality”, he is the power of nature between the lines. The combination of those different features seems to bring out the best from his player.
I don’t think anyone will be shocked or a little surprised if New Mexico begins to win football games in the next few years.
One thing is certain: New Mexico has gained a lot of football fans at Southern Illinois University in the past week. And why? You just need to cheer for Jerry Kill.
