Winchendon, Massachusetts (AP) — Massachusetts veteran organization weekends with Norman Rockwell’s original paintings in 1945 to raise money after years of pandemic declines in earnings. Sold for $ 3.6 million at the auction.
The American Legion Post 193 in Winchendon obtained this painting in 1959 with a donation from a local priest’s art collection. Former postmaster Coral May Grout said it was time after considering whether to sell for nearly 20 years. Reported by Telegram & Gazette.
“Thanksgiving House” depicts a soldier sitting next to his mother looking at him lovingly, peeling a potato. It was commissioned to the November 24, 1945 issue of The Saturday Evening Post. On the auction list, the painting was described as “the first Thanksgiving story after the Allied victory.”
The artwork has been hanging near the front door of the corps for years, and most members thought it was a duplicate. According to the newspaper, they evaluated the painting in the early 1980s after someone offered to buy it for $ 500. Since then, the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge has kept it safe and occasionally exhibited it in special exhibits.
However, in the face of the choice of permanently closing the post or parting from Rockwell, the members decided to sell it.
The painting was estimated to be up to $ 7 million, but eventually won $ 3.6 million, and Legion would receive additional funding negotiated with the auction house, the newspaper said.
