Skopje, North Macedonia (AP) — Police in North Macedonia say they have found 42 migrants from trucks in the southeastern part of the country near the Greek border.

A police police car intended to track, flag and inspect trucks near the town of Stard Iran, 160 km (100 miles) south of Skopje’s capital, on Saturday. Truck drivers and passengers jumped out while the vehicle was in motion before they could. The truck then turned around and collided with a police police car. The police officer is not injured.

Police found 41 immigrants from Syria and one Bangladesh packed in a truck. No one was injured.

Police believe they were from until the group was transferred to an immigrant shelter in the border town of Gevgelija and deported to Greece.

Police said it was the first large immigrant group found in North Macedonia in the last six months.

The small country of the Balkans was the main route for immigrants to go to the wealthier countries of Europe. However, since the COVID-19 pandemic and tighter border controls, Albania has become a desirable place for migrants from Greece on their way to Central and Northern Europe.
