Despite precautions, cases have already been reported in travelers to Belgium, Israel and Hong Kong.
Today, the United Kingdom has identified two related cases of the new Omicron variant. The UK has just announced a new way to travel to combat this variant. Currently, travelers are required to undergo PCR testing and quarantine upon arrival until a negative result is returned.
Germany has shown that there is probably one case. Dutch authorities are also checking for new variants after 61 passengers have been tested positive for COVID-19 on two flights from South Africa.
Omicron raises concerns because it is believed to have a high number of mutations and a high degree of infection. The fear is that it is resistant to existing vaccines and can cause “breakthrough” cases in those already vaccinated. Due to the long incubation period, it can take several weeks before a decision is made. This is one of the busiest travel times of the year on the planet.
US President Joe Biden told reporters on Friday about the new variant, “We have decided to be cautious.” The United States will restrict travel from South Africa and seven other neighboring countries from Monday.

Health officials around the world were concerned about the rapid spread of the subspecies among South African adolescents, although there were no immediate signs of whether the subspecies would cause more serious illness.
