Kansas City, Missouri (AP) — Almost $ 1.4 million was raised as of Saturday for a man who spent 43 years behind the bar before a judge overturned his conviction in a triple murder.
The Midwest Innocence Project launched a GoFundMe fundraiser when it fought for the release of Kevin Strickland. He said he couldn’t get compensation from Missouri and needed to help pay basic living expenses. The 62-year-old Strickland is not eligible because the state only allows tort payments to those who have been convicted by evidence of DNA.
Judge James Welsh, a former judge of the Missouri Court of Appeals, ordered his release on Tuesday, finding that the evidence used to convict Strickland was subsequently withdrawn or disproved. By noon on Saturday, $ 1.39 million had been donated to support Strickland.
Strickland always claimed that he was watching TV at home and had nothing to do with the 1978 murder he was 18 years old.
When he left the prison, he said, “I am grateful that God has let me through this for 43 years.”
