Washington(Hill) – Federal prosecutors have recommended Jacob Chansley, a parliamentary mob known as “QAnon Shaman” in his eccentric costume, to 51 months in prison.
In the memorandum of judgment Submitted on Tuesday“We cannot exaggerate the seriousness of the defendant’s actions as one of the most prominent figures in the historic riots in the Capitol,” the prosecutor said.
In addition to four years in prison, the government is seeking three years of supervised release and $ 2,000 in damages.
Chanceley became one of the most famous riots when he paraded the Houses of Parliament, wearing a horned hat, painting his face in red, white, and blue and shirtless. In early September, he pleaded guilty to obstructing an official proceeding, which was charged with up to 20 years in prison.
Earlier this year, Chansley went on a hunger strike and sought amnesty from former President Trump.
Prosecutors say Chansley was one of the first 30 rioters to enter the Capitol. He entered the building at 2:15 pm and was escorted from the east about an hour later.
While inside the Capitol, Chansley entered the Senate Gallery at around 2:52 pm, scaling up the Senate pedestal.
“After that day’s events, the defendant conducted multiple interviews with the media, supporting his belief that he wasn’t doing anything wrong,” the prosecutor wrote. “The rigor of his actions and the respect for the laws of this country must impress him.”
Chancery will be sentenced next Wednesday. His lawyer, Albert Watkins, I also submitted a memorandum of understanding On Tuesday, he asked his client to sentence him only when he was already in prison.
Chancery has been detained since his arrest in January. Watkins claimed that Chansley had been in a cell for more than 300 days and suffered from severe anxiety and panic attacks while being imprisoned despite being non-violent.
“It’s time for the shaman to embark on a journey to freedom, not from prison, but from a significant mental health weakness,” Watkins said. “It’s time for Mr. Chancery to start his journey from the inside out.”
