“Throwback Thursday” looks back on the Bears and Lions Thanksgiving match

Detroit – Although by no means an annual tradition here in Chicago, the Bears have participated in a fair share of Thanksgiving football games for many years.

Most often, it’s playing against one of the oldest rivals in the National Football League, which will begin in 2021.

The Bears will face the Thanksgiving Lions for the 19th time in a tradition that continues in Detroit. The Bears were there to start it in 1934, when rivals hosted the first game on the holidays, as George Halas’ team defeated the Lions 19-16 in the first contest.

As the tight series continues, it’s the third time the team has met at Thanksgiving for the first time in four years. Bears now has a 10-8 advantage in games played during the holiday season and is moving forward in the series thanks to two wins in 2018 and 2019.

Larry Hawley details this holiday rival in this week’s WGN News Now “Throwback Thursday.” This can be seen in the video above.
