Quick Tip: Better Business Bureau warns Chicago, Illinois of possible complaints, QR code scanning scams

Chicago (WLS)-QR codes are more popular than ever! Companies can have consumers scan for links to restaurant menus, app downloads, shopping promotions, and more.

However, QR codes are invisible to the human eye, so fraudsters can easily disguise predatory links without the need for consumers to scrutinize them.

Better Business Bureau is increasingly reporting fraudsters using QR codes to mislead consumers, open malicious websites and collect personal and login credentials.

If you receive a QR code from someone you know, check it before scanning to make sure it hasn’t been hacked.

If you receive a one-sided message from a stranger, don’t scan the QR code, even if they promise an exciting promotion.

Beware of QR codes that appear to be tampered with or damaged. Scammers can modify legitimate business ads by placing a fake QR code on top of a real QR code.

You can install a QR scanner with enhanced security that can detect dangerous links before opening them.
