Prague (AP) —Thousands marched in the Czech capital on Sunday protesting the obligation to vaccinate certain groups, including people over the age of 60.
Participants did not wear face covers or follow social distance rules, despite requests from police. One was detained.
Protesters advocating “freedom”. He claimed that their constitutional rights were violated. They said they were not against voluntary vaccination, but against mandatory vaccination.
This week, the government issued an order requiring vaccinations for people over the age of 60, medical personnel, police officers, firefighters and medical students.
The order is expected to come into effect in March, but may be overthrown. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš’s administration will be replaced by a new government formed by five political parties that won the October parliamentary elections led by Prime Minister Petr Fiara.
The new coalition government will be sworn in next week. The coalition can oppose and revoke the obligation to vaccinate the elderly. So far, 60.3% of the 10.7 million people have been fully vaccinated.
The country has recently faced a record surge in new infections, but the number of new cases has declined by more than a week.
