Atlanta (AP) — Delta announced on Wednesday that it will extend the time it takes to rebook credits earned when a customer purchases a flight during a pandemic but cancels it until 2023.
Prior to the announcement, Delta’s flight credits were set to expire at the end of 2022. The new date also applies to all tickets purchased in 2022. Customers can use their credits throughout 2024 if the trip is booked by December 31st. In 2023, the airline said.
This move did not immediately match American Airlines or United Airlines, whose credits were set to expire on March 31st and December 31st, respectively.
If the airline cancels the flight, passengers are entitled to a refund under federal law. However, if the passenger cancels, the airline will usually only provide some form of credit or voucher and will usually have a one-year expiration date.
Refunds are a major source of airline consumer complaints against the US Department of Transportation. Congress is considering legislation that requires airlines to cover accommodation, meals, and other costs incurred by consumers when they cancel their flight.
