Indianapolis (AP) — One of the longest-serving state senators in Indiana has decided to resign immediately from the legislature.
Democratic Senator Frank Mrvan of Hammond, the father of US Congressman Frank J. Mrvan, announced his decision on Tuesday. 88-year-old Murvan didn’t say the reason for his resignation, but he has been absent from the legislative assembly for several weeks at a time in recent years because of unclear health reasons.
Murvan has represented Hammond and neighboring communities in the Legislature, except for four years since 1978, and has served in the Legislature for over 39 years.
Senate Democratic leader Greg Taylor has called Mulvan “a tireless supporter of the Fuscher family” through his decades of service.
Mrvan’s retirement decision will continue after the 2022 elections, after the Republican-controlled parliament approves the new legislative district and draws East Chicago’s Mrvan and Democratic Senator Lonnie Randolph into the same constituency.
Democratic Caucus will meet in the coming weeks to choose an alternative to the rest of this year’s legislative session, which is scheduled to end in mid-March.
