Raiders go to Patriot Way with new GM, probably coach

The Las Vegas Raiders are trying to build a team on the Patriot Way.

Owner Mark Davis has taken advantage of the NFL’s most successful franchise in the last two decades by hiring Patriots director of players Dave Ziegler as the new general manager. Davis is approaching a deal to make Josh McDaniels, the attack coordinator of New England, a new coach in Las Vegas.

The Raiders announced on Sunday that they had hired Ziegler to replace Mike Mayock, who was fired. Search savvy people say that Jon Gruden has signed a contract with McDaniels to make him a coach to fill in the gaps that arose when he resigned in October. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not made an announcement.

Davis interviewed several candidates in both positions before choosing a pair with a long history to work with. The two are John Carroll’s college teammates, and McDaniels took Ziegler to Denver with his first head coach, Stint.

The two have worked together in New England for the past nine seasons. McDaniels was an aggressive coordinator, and Ziegler went up the Scout division and was promoted to Player’s Human Resources Manager in 2021.

The two will take over the team that has left the second playoff berth in the last 19 seasons. Las Vegas won the last four games of the regular season to qualify as a wildcard before losing in Cincinnati.

Interim coach Rich Visatch led the team to a difficult season after Gruden resigned in October after releasing an old offensive email. Star receiver Henry Ruggs III was released in November after being charged with a drunk driving felony after a fatal accident that killed a 23-year-old woman.

Visatch’s work gained his players’ support, but Davis chose to go in a different direction.

McDaniels is considered one of the brightest and most aggressive brains in the game by working with Tom Brady for many years at the Patriots and contributing to the development of the rookie Mac Jones this season.

However, his first experience as a head coach collapsed shortly after he started 6-0 in 2009 after he traded off quarterback Jay Cutler in one of his first moves. Denver finished 8-8 that season, and McDaniels was fired in 2010 with a record of 3-9, losing 17 of his last 22 coaching games.

McDaniels also said the NFL’s $ 50,000 for not reporting that the team’s video operations director had recorded the San Francisco 49ers walkthrough practice on videotape before the team played in London in 2010. I was fined. As a result of the investigation, McDaniels did not know about taping in advance and refused to see it, but was punished for not immediately reporting the violation to the league.

Some of Bill Belichick’s former assistants in New England have jobs as head coaches, but their success rates are not high.

Seven coaches, McDaniels, Romeo Clenel, Eric Mangini, Bill O’Brien, Matt Patricia, Brian Flores and Joe Judge, combined a .410 win rate and five playoff berths in the 27 seasons they began as head coaches. O’Brien had four playoff seasons in Houston, and Manzini played off another season in Jets.

McDaniels will take over a team with several key elements, including quarterback Derek Carr, who is celebrating the final year of the deal.

Las Vegas is also set in several other positions, including Maxx Crosby on the Star Edge Rasher, Darren Waller on the tight end, Kolton Miller on the left tackle, and Hunter Ren Flow on the slot receiver.

The Raiders will also decide whether to choose the fifth-year option for the first round of 2019 picks, Clerin Ferrell, Josh Jacobs and Jonathan Abram, this offseason.

Ferrel had a limited role this season and had a hard time making a big impact after being ranked 4th overall. Jacobs was pretty productive in the two 1,000-yard rush seasons, but the $ 10.1 million guaranteed salary in 2023 can be high.

Abram had only played 28 games due to a three-season injury and had a hard time ensuring his safety.
