South Carolina adds NFL staff Lucas to coach linebackers

Columbia, South Carolina-South Carolina has hired former Jacksonville Jaguars assistant Sterling Lucas as an outside linebacker and defensive end coach.

The school board approved Lucas’ two-year contract on Friday. The contract is valid until December 31, 2023 and will pay Lucas $ 350,000 annually.

Lucas takes over Mike Petersen, who left to join Florida coach Billy Napier.

Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer said there was a lot of interest in this position, but Lucas believes he has what the team needs to keep moving forward.

“He is eager to get to work,” Beamer said of his new hire.

Growing up about 30 miles away in Orangeburg, South Carolina, Lucas has been working for the NFL since 2015. He played various roles at the Baltimore Ravens until 2000 before becoming the Jaguars Assistant Defensive Line Coach.

Lucas began coaching at North Carolina State University as a graduate strength and conditioning coach and a defensive graduate assistant.
