Harvey, Illinois (AP) — A woman was accused of reckless murder after the death of a 4-year-old girl who was attacked by a car driving a car in a playground near an elementary school on the outskirts of Chicago.
Swaleha Vola was indicted this week, according to Harvey police reports and Sheriff Mohammad, a spokesman for the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.
Harvey Police Deputy Chief Cameron Bidding said Friday, after picking up a child from outside Whittier Elementary School in Harvey, southern Chicago, Vola, who was driving on September 8, 2021, was speaking on her cell phone. Witnesses said he said.
He said her car crossed the curb and passed through the fence before hitting the swing, hitting the violet singleton at the playground in the park opposite the school.
Police said the FBI was able to collect cell phone records to locate her and confirm that she was in use at the time of the crash.
“This tragedy didn’t have to happen,” the bid said Friday. “It was a terrifying reminder of what could happen when people were distracted and driven. Violet singletons shouldn’t die.”
According to police, Wola had three young children in the car when the singleton was attacked. WGN-TV Vhora reported that she was 32 years old.
Vhora was arrested, but was released without being charged later because police investigated the cause of the crash, Biddings said.
The Associated Press was unable to find the home phone number of Vhora on bail.
