Jacksonville, Florida (AP) — Doug Pederson does not have the power that Urban Meyer had at Jacksonville Jaguars. The team and their fans can only expect it to be good.
Owner Shad Khan introduced Pederson as a Jaguars coach on Saturday, and the team told the NFL that he had reported directly to Khan and applied to hire a vice president to oversee Pederson and general manager Trent Barke. ..
This is a structure that is very different from what Jaguar has adopted in the last two years. Khan’s only other EVP was Tom Kofflin, who won the Super Bowl twice. Tom Cofflin continued to work for three seasons (2017-19) and was there when Jacksonville last played off.
Kahn adopted the traditional coach GM (Dag Marone-Dave Caldwell) model in 2020 after Kafrin was fired, and hired Meyer in 2021 to lead the coach-centric model. Meyer was fired in mid-December after 13 games, one of the most turbulent terms in NFL history.
“One of the reasons we searched was not just to find potential head coaches, but to learn about other organizations,” Khan said. “That is, it’s a by-product of coaching search.
“So some practices, some functional structures, we got great insights about it, so strengthening football operations and increasing staff is definitely part of our goal. The organization was too flat and I would like to add more brains and more people to strengthen it. “
Kahn plans to hire an EVP and assistant general manager to work under Barke. Barke has been on fire in the last few months after Khan chose to keep him instead of cleaning the house. Jags has already interviewed former Minnesota GM Rick Spielman. NFL rules also require Jacksonville to interview two external minority candidates for EVP work.
The 57-year-old Barke welcomed the reorganization.
“This question is asked in 32 buildings throughout the league. Who has power? Who is the final decision maker?” He said. “Show me one building you’re winning, not cooperative. It doesn’t happen in the National Football League.”
Jacksonville hired Pederson on Thursday and reached his term five weeks after the team first interviewed a former Philadelphia Eagles coach. Pederson was one of the 10 candidates interviewed, which Khan called “a thorough process without prejudice.”
Pederson was one of the two interviewed for the second time. Byron Leftwich, the Tampa Bay attack coordinator, was another.
The 54-year-old Pederson was widely regarded as one of the top options. He played three playoffs in five seasons in Philadelphia, leading the Eagles to victory in the first Super Bowl following the 2017 season. After being fired at the end of the 2020 season, he chose to take a year off and moved south on Interstate 95 to Jupiter, about a four-hour drive south.
Pederson witnessed the eldest son of his three sons getting married, reuniting with his wife, and being able to spend time with his brother before he died of cancer.
“I wanted to be a coach and I really knew I was successful and continued to be the head coach of the league,” Pederson said. “It never left. I needed some time to get together a little further away …
“Did I miss football? Yes, I did. So I went to the camp last year and visited some guys. I just had to fix that football and be around it. As the season progresses and we look at the entire league, I think those football competitive juices are back. “
He also interviewed Chicago and New Orleans before landing in Jacksonville. What stood out in this job was having Trevor Lawrence as a franchise quarterback.
“It’s a shame that things didn’t always go well last year, but it’s now late,” Pederson said. “I’m excited to come here, roll up my sleeves, go to work, strengthen his skill set and create a successful system. I’m proud of that.
