Gary Johnson, Chair of the ALPLM Board of Directors, thanked First Lady Pritzker for his generous donations.

“This treasure helps Abraham Lincoln tell the story of his journey from politician to president to national symbol. Still, he manages to capture the power and determination that the country will soon need to humanize Lincoln. You can, “says Johnson.

“We were delighted to learn that this amazing part of President Lincoln’s legacy is coming to ALPLM. It’s a powerful work of art and an important historical piece that deserves to be seen by Lincoln fans around the world. “” Said Christina Shut, Managing Director of the Library and Museum. “We plan to showcase the bust as soon as possible so that Lincoln fans around the world can visit us and assess its impact.”

The bust was purchased at auction last week for $ 400,000 and shipped directly to ALPLM.

The acclaimed sculptor Leonard Volk created a portrayal of the 1860 presidential election. This later became a popular reference to help establish Lincoln’s image among voters who wanted to know more about the presidential candidate.

Volk’s sculpture helped the dull attack that Lincoln faced when he ran for president, explained Dr. Ian Hunt, who is responsible for the acquisition of the presidential library.

“The images taken by Volk dispelled criticisms of the future president as clumsy, homely, or weak. Instead, Volk’s work was certainly helpful in driving Lincoln to the White House. , A sense of honesty and personality, “Hunt said.

According to experts, a copy of this bust was handed over to Lincoln by a sculptor on May 18, 1860, the day after Lincoln was nominated as a Republican presidential candidate.

They kept it until they moved to Washington, DC in February 1861. Instead of taking it, they handed it over to their neighbor and family friend Noyes Miner and left it to his family until the first female bought it.

Minor’s descendants were also the owners of the rare Lincoln Bible, which was donated to the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in 2019.
