(THE HILL) —The Olympic organizers said they do not expect COVID-19 cases to fluctuate any further as fewer people arrive in Beijing for the Winter Olympics.
Hwang Chun, Deputy Director of the Convention’s Pandemic Control Bureau, said the number of COVID-19 positive cases increased as more people arrived in Beijing for the event, but that trend after the opening ceremony. Said that it had declined.
Huang said that the fewer inbound flights, the less likely there are cases of COVID-19.
“After Friday’s opening ceremony, we’ll have fewer arrivals and fewer flights arriving, which means fewer positive cases,” said Fan. Reuters..
“We want to be able to continue that trend and there may be slight fluctuations,” he added.
However, Mr Huang said authorities need to make sure that mitigation measures are still being implemented within the “closed loop” to avoid internal spread. A “closed loop” is a bubble that is implemented to keep Olympic staff healthy during the event.
“We need to pay attention to what we do in closed loops. We haven’t seen any cluster spreads and so far haven’t affected the smooth progress of the competition,” Reuters said.
He also said that if health precautions were followed, the number of events related to the Games would “remain at a relatively low level.”
“If we all take action, I think the level of positive cases will remain relatively low,” Reuters said.
The Winter Olympics began on Friday.
According to Reuters, China reported 10 new COVID-19 infections among its Olympic-related personnel on Sunday, less than the 45 reported the day before.
According to Reuters, the four additional cases were individuals who had just arrived in the country for the tournament and included two athletes or team personnel. The other six were already in a “closed loop”.
