Rockford, Illinois (AP) — A police officer in northern Illinois was shot dead early Thursday, but was not injured because he wore a bulletproof vest, officials said.
According to Rockford police, police officers who heard gunshots from close range gathered in the area.
A bullet passed through the passenger seat door of a policeman’s vehicle. Police felt a sharp pain on his side, but the bullet did not penetrate his bulletproof vest, police said. The bullet was later found on the vehicle floorboard.
Police officers were evaluated at the hospital as a precautionary measure. The name of the four-year veteran has not been announced.
No arrests have been made.
