Berlin (AP) — South Africa promised more ambitious emission targets on Monday. This is a welcome move for climate change activists.
The South African government has informed the United Nations Climate Service that it aims to limit greenhouse gas emissions to less than 510 million tonnes by 2025 and less than 420 million tonnes by 2030.
The new target represents a significantly lower cap compared to the previous 2016 target of reducing emissions to less than 614 million tonnes over the next decade. The lower limit of the target range has also been shifted from 398 million tons of carbon dioxide to 350 million tons by 2030.
According to the World Resources Institute, a Washington-based environmental think tank, the new goal means that South Africa’s emissions will absolutely decline from 2025, ten years earlier than planned.
“South Africa’s commitment to the new climate is far more ambitious than the state advocated when the Paris Agreement was signed five years ago,” said Helen Mountford, Vice President of Climate and Economy at WRI. Says.
She said the country’s updated goal is more in line with the global goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) by the end of the century, compared to pre-industrial times. I added.
South Africa aims to increase its use of renewable energy and phase out coal-fired power while preparing for the effects of climate change such as drought.
