Champaign, Illinois (WAND)-The mayor of Champaign, police, and district 4 leaders have dealt with the recent violence that a school bus was shot at a press conference on Friday.
As the SUV was heading north on Neil Street on Thursday afternoon, a shootout erupted from a passing vehicle, colliding with a black SUV in the area and a Unit 4 bus. An SUV crashed at Moreland Boulevard and Town Center Boulevard, injuring the driver of the vehicle. It is unknown whether his injury was due to a gunshot wound or a debris from a crash.
One shot hit the bus. The students and staff were not injured.
On Friday, Deputy Police Chief Nathan Russ told reporters that he did not believe the situation happened randomly and involved people who knew each other. He said the ongoing feud among cohabiting people was likely to be the motive.
“Yesterday’s shooting reminded us more tragically that the people involved in gun crime in our city did not consider human life,” Russ said.
He and Deborah Feinen, Mayor of Champaign, repeated the same message at a press conference. It was that people needed to step forward to help resolve these crimes. Mr Feinen said police couldn’t do this alone and needed community support.
“It’s rude that this can happen because someone doesn’t care much about human life,” Feinen said. “Gun violence in our neighborhood, downtown, campus town, and elsewhere in our community is unacceptable. We have a small group of individuals defining our community. I can’t keep allowing. “
